Happy Friday!

You made it! And given the past couple weeks, Covid may have hit your household – and that’s OK. It SUCKS, to be sure, but it’s so prevalent now that even the best avoidance tactics may not work, especially with the lack of structural mitigation. No shame in it – just do your best to isolate and take care of yourself. And if you’re still negative – keep doing what you can to stay that way – don’t give in! I know it feels inevitable and you may want to just say “fuck it” but keep trying, for yourself and those around you.

Here in my corner of the world I’m wide awake at 5AM – we had more snow last night and bless VDOT*, they were rolling through the neighborhood and woke me up at 4AM – realized I might as well just get up and get some coffee. And of course, Lily had to go to the basement and tell my brother, “HEY BOY, WE’RE UP EARLY, YOU SHOULD COME UPSTAIRS AND HANG OUT!”

Watching my brother try to do the math to make a pot of hot coffee…well, I’m just glad I made a pitcher of cold brew in the middle of the day when I was 110% conscious.

The upside of being up at the crack of pre-dawn is that I can at least start work early and then start my weekend early. Lily – well, she’s already sacked out again.

You stay safe and have a good weekend.

How to mark Jan 6?

I think the Democrats should make good on every last campaign promise they’ve made. That would do them (and us) more good than just sitting around saying, “Well, you can’t elect those fascists.”

I mean, getting into office and just doing nothing but saying, “Look at us not being authoritarian assholes” just doesn’t cut it.

There’s been a *slight* dip in our county case numbers – maybe we’re passing the peak?

And I thought our community had an agreement that we wouldn’t be panic shopping anymore after Plague Friday, but no, because, snow. I had to get milk yesterday – the only thing there was organic fat free milk, or ultra pasteurized whole milk. So, we have two quarts of milk that don’t expire for 3 months. It’s working in my coffee so far.

And today, but before today!

Ouch

Didn’t really realize how well I’d been sleeping until I got a night of terrible sleep – of course when I have to be up an hour earlier than usual. Today is gonna hurt. A lot. Come ooooooon, caffeine!

So, what happened January 5th?

So, time to cancel some things, I guess.

So, realizing I’ve got 3 appointments this month and yeah, that’s not ideal. Next week’s session with the acupuncturist will definitely need to be rescheduled. :( I hate missing it, cause it’s been so good for my shoulders/neck/jaw and the sessions are always so relaxing. But, best to hold off until cases drop back towards something that is less of this insane mess.

And my dumbass managed to double book myself the last Friday in January with both the hair salon and dentist, so one has to be rescheduled no matter what and the other, well, I guess we’ll see where things stand the week before.

What’s so weird to me is the salon is actually safer than the dentist – don’t have to take off my mask to get my hair done, and the room is far larger and with all the hair chemicals, it’s very well ventilated.

It was just so nice to be able to do some personal/health care things for a while. (Well, except the dentist, cause it’s the dentist.) But, last month, our average case numbers in the county were under 275 a day, which isn’t awesome, but I felt reasonably safe being vaccinated/boosted/masked. Now we’re running a 7 day average of over 2,000 cases a day, and yes, my risk assessment has definitely changed.

Breakthrough cases are still less than 10% of all new cases right now, which isn’t terrible by any means, but I don’t see a reason to chance it and spend extended time indoors with others when I can wait things out until this wave passes. Also – law of large numbers and all that – when I got my hair done on 12/17, that was 119 breakthrough cases in a week in the county. As of yesterday, that was 967 in a week.

It’s just so frustrating to be doing what I can to flatten curves (or bend that straight line) and it just doesn’t seem to matter. I know it could be exponentially worse, but I can barely wrap my head around these numbers right now.

You stay safe.

It’s snowing!

And it can stop now, LOL. It’s been going for maybe an hour, and it’s very pretty and it can be done, thank you.

I love, love, love working remotely, but it also means no snow days. I remember starting very early in my career, every October with whatever boss I had, we would have to have a little sit down where I explained that I would not be risking my life/car to get to the office in snow or ice. (Even my first go round with support – I made them put the remote connection software on my home computer.)

It usually was met with raised eyebrows, but acquiescence. “You can’t expect me to wreck my car and possibly get injured for this place.” “Uhh, I guess not.”

Lily has given up on the day already, LOL.

So, bread.

OK, with sugar in the yeast, the first rise was better than yesterday.

Bowl of bread dough

Second rise, OK, but expected a wee bit better when I first peeked at it.

Dough rolled into loaf, ready for oven

Suspected the spot I was letting it rise wasn’t warm enough. Got out thermometer. 73º on the kitchen counter. Ideal temp is 75-78º – started wandering around with the thermometer like a deranged water witch, but for air temperature. Discovered the perfect spot is actually right on the sofa next to me, ROFL.

So, I parked the baking sheet there while I waited for the oven to heat up. (Wasn’t long enough to make a difference, but I had to try.) Baked for 25 minutes at 450º then a butter wash and then 5 more minutes in the oven.

Mmmm, bread

The butter wash is nice – still have a pleasingly crunchy crust, but not “break your teeth” crunchy. The back corner did get a tiny bit overcooked, but the first slice after it was excellent. And the second slice, and third.

So, if I do this again next weekend, definitely going to scout around the kitchen/living room again to find the right temp for the dough to rise, and I think I may put some cheese in it.

Hmmmm

So, one thing I noticed with yesterday’s bread is that the dough didn’t rise as much as I expected. It did rise, but just…I thought it would be more. But still, tasty bread.

This morning as I am putting together the new batch, I go to dissolve the yeast and the recipe just says to dissolve in 1 1/4 cups of warm water. The *packet* says dissolve with a teaspoon of sugar.

Wait, what now? I don’t recall ever putting sugar in with the yeast. Like, ever… I mean, it’s been a while since I baked, but I think I’d remember that.

So, I toss in a teaspoon of raw sugar, wait 10 minutes, and oh my, the bubbles.

The dough is on the first rise. It’s still got 35 minutes to go, but I am SO interested to see what happens.

Goooooood morning!

Well, first piece of news I saw this morning was that Marjorie Taylor Greene has FINALLY been given the boot from Twitter. Her fucked up, disinfo laden genocidal Covid rant yesterday was the last straw – she should never have been given FIVE chances in the first place. And nothing of value will be lost here.

After yesterday’s half-successful bread loaf, I’m giving it another go today with a butter wash for the last 5 minutes to see if we can have a bread crust that isn’t rock hard. (The inside was truly good, tho – the loaf is already 3/4 gone.)

They were saying on the radio that Omicron could peak mid-January. That can’t come soon enough – our case numbers in the county are still nuts and I swear every time I add a new day to my little chart, the axis auto-adjusts. Our hospitalizations remain low, which is good, but our ER’s are apparently overwhelmed with people looking for PCR tests or are mildly symptomatic and don’t know what to do about it. (I get it, I’m not sure I’d know at what point to actively seek care.)

I cut my finger yesterday – very minor, fixed with a bandaid, totally fine today. But all I could think about was if it was worse, I’d be fucked. Walk into an ER or Urgent Care right now, and you’re walking out with Covid, plus the wait times… Outmaneuvering Covid is hard enough – doing everything you can to make sure you don’t need any *other* medical care, it’s a bit much.

Hang in there and be careful.

Partial baking fail…

So cook time is 25 minutes, plus egg wash, then 5-10 minutes more.

I skipped the egg wash and did 35 minutes, forgetting from prior experience that 30 works better.

The inside is VERY tasty! The outside is…VERY crusty, ROFL.

I think I may do another loaf tomorrow with a butter wash for the last 5 minutes as the interwebs tell me that will give a softer crust. (I always forget how easy this is to make – the actual prep time is maybe 15 minutes – all the rest of it is letting dough rise.)

But, hey right now, saw off a slice, peel off the crust (it comes off quite neatly) and slather it in butter and YUM.

Homemade french bread, sliced in half.

A shiny new year

OK, a bit grey and drizzly here, but, we have a blank slate again, so let’s make the best of it.

I’m getting the new year started off well – slept in new sheets & comforter cover, and there is a batch of bread dough rising right now.

I knew my old sheets were worn out & ratty, but my lord, the new sheets really highlight just how worn out and ratty the old ones were. Lily also likes the new comforter cover, cause it matches her!

Can you spot the kitty?

Hopefully this will be the year we can put Covid in the rear view window. To be sure, January & February will probably be rough – I suspect what the governments won’t shut down, Omicron will. I’m ready for delays and various and sundry inconveniences (for lack of a better word coming to mind) – much like Spring 2020. Sadly, it won’t be things closing down as a preventative measure, but closing down because folks are sick, because we have no structural mitigation beyond “get vaccinated.”

And that blows. But hopefully if we all do our best – get vaxxed and/or boosted, mask up, get takeout, help each other out, isolate properly as long as possible if positive (understanding not everyone will be able to do this, because, capitalism) – maybe we can stop giving this virus transmission vectors all over the place.

In an act of aggressive optimism, I have a 2022 Thoughts of Dog planner. Because dammit, there WILL be some good times and things to plan for this year at some point.

Shot of planner cover with an illustrated dog with a stuffed elephant saying "in case you forgot, i love you"
The dog is right.

Also, trying something new this year – granted it will probably last 3 weeks, LOL – but, shots from January 1 years past:

Though I am sure it will have its share of potholes along the way – let’s make 2022 better.

Take care and stay safe.
