It’s a BALMY 26º out there!

Given that it was 19º when I left the house to hit the market & Starbucks, those temps are just rocketing up!! My heavy winter coat did it’s job wonderfully this morning. We’ll get up to freezing if we’re lucky today, but we do have very clear and sunny skies, so that’s something – hopefully the sun will be enough to get the ice melt going on the couple spots I had to hit on the driveway this morning. 😬

A few branches of an azalea bush, fully encased in ice
How cold is it? Really freakin’ cold!

I saw people out exercising this morning. Good for y’all! And also, oh no baby, what are you doing? It’s so cold out, your boogers are gonna freeze! But I will admit, even though I was only out and about for a few minutes, that it does make the inside feel SOOOOOO wonderfully warm when you get back in.

Gotta brag on myself for a moment – yesterday I got my house stuff done and office stuff done and didn’t use either as a procrastination device for the other! I also got two nice clear examples of the app I’m working on being all squirrely for my dev to look at on Monday, woohoo!

Speaking of office work, I saw that “knowledge workers average about 3 hours of productive work a day” bit bouncing around again this week – I did more digging on it, and it’s still not totally clear to me if folks are running out of shit to do, or are running out of brainpower – but it seems more the brainpower side of things. Where the fuck are these 3 hour jobs?? I average between 1-2 hours of admin time/non-lunch-breaks over a day and I am full tilt the rest of the time, and honestly, if I eased up on that, I’m pretty sure my ass would be fired. It does explain why I’m usually mentally fried by the end of the day. (Oh, and in support? We had to be ON all 8 hours – and they wonder why there is burnout.)

And on a productivity note, it’s time to go tackle the house stuff so I can enjoy the remains of the weekend. Only one “Ugh, do I *have* to?” on the list, and that is cleaning Lily’s water fountain. It needs to be hand washed, which isn’t hard, but even with an anti-fatigue mat at the sink, my body HATES standing still like that. But – anything for the LilyMonster. 🥰

Have a fantastic day, and STAY WARM!

Happy Snowy Saturday!

We ended up getting about and inch or so of snow on Monday, about 12 hours ahead of the forecast – VDOT got caught up a bit short on that one, then yesterday about 2-3 inches, on schedule at least, so the roads are already very well treated this morning and I was able to get out for my beloved weekend Starbucks. And the sun is out, and thanks to the snow, there is more natural light in the house this morning than there is in the middle of July.

Though it is only TWENTY THREE FREAKIN’ DEGREES OUT THERE. 🥶🥶🥶 Definitely heavy coat time, even my thickest hoodie wouldn’t cut it today. Thank you Columbia for making very nice 3-in-1’s and in a color that apparently no one liked so it ended up on clearance at REI last spring. Even if I’ve only needed to wear it like, 3 times since I got it – really good purchase.

Snip of screenshot of my Columbia jacket showing the Stone Green color.
Stone Green is a great color!

Also, I don’t remember when I did it, but I’m glad I setup a basket for gloves/hats/scarves next to the door – earlier this week, I’d briefly forgotten I’d even done it and had a moment of “Aw, shit, where are my gloves?” then remembered, WAIT, THERE IS A BASKET FULL OF THEM!

I got this very pretty shot of the LilyMonster yesterday and I put it on Mastodon and it got boosted by a couple big accounts and well, she is a hit. I don’t really pay attention to boosts/likes, but when your phone won’t stop beeping, you have to look – 141 reposts and 592 likes. That is a bit bonkers, but the Fediverse does love their cats!

Headshot of Lily, a black and orange tortoiseshell cat, looking over her shoulder at me, and being very regal.
So regal!

I have to do some office work this weekend, and there are also all the various and sundry weekend to-do’s – so the big question is, will I use the housework to avoid the office work, use the office work to avoid the housework, or just sit on the couch avoiding both? 🤣

My little to-do box is still working well for my dysfunctional brain, though, and I’ve added a couple stickers I got for Christmas – I look at it and tell myself, “You’re a peliCAN not a peliCAN’T!” (And yes, I laugh every damn time I think it.)

Top view of a black index card box. On the left there is a sticker of a pelican, and on the right, a sticker of a pink spoonbill bird
You are never too old for stickers

OK, I have dithered around more than enough this morning, as it is now technically the afternoon. 😬

Time to go get more ticked off the list beyond “Brush teeth, wash face” – you have a fantastic day!!

Where did the sun go?

OK, there was sun when I went out for coffee, and now it has clouded over again.* Dammit! I need some sun to steel myself for potential snow on Tuesday, though I have done what I can to prevent that white nonsense by purchasing an cordless electric snow shoveler**, which will arrive tomorrow. When I ordered the electric shovel, they were calling for 2-5 inches and I just wanted something that would make shoveling a bit easier, and this should fit the bill.

The fact of the matter is, my brother and I aren’t 20 year-olds anymore and I’d prefer snow maintenance not induce a cardiac event. And since putting the order in, the forecast has changed to “AM snow showers” with no accumulation, LOL. See, doing it’s job already!

The household to-do’s are nagging at my brain, which I guess is good rather than the usual “What to-do’s? Everything is fine!” that my brain usually does. So far all I’ve knocked off is brush teeth, wash face, get coffee, download Quicken stuff, and clear the Gmail account. Not exactly off to the races, but I have changed from my “go get coffee” jeans to “get things done” comfy pants, so, it’s a step in the right direction.

And in a baller procrastination move, I’ve made myself a pastrami & chipotle chicken sandwich on a tiny Hawaiian roll, because who doesn’t love a tiny sandwich? But I do need to eat something, so it’s technically self care I think? 🤣

OK, sandwich is finished, Iggy the Roomba is running and if my little robot vacuum can do his thing, I can do mine. I know once I pry myself off the couch, and just get going, I’ll be fine – it’s the “prying myself off the couch” part that is SO DAMN HARD.

Alright, time to fire up the get shit done tunes, and get shit done.

You have a fantastic day and if your weather is complete shit – be safe.

* Yes, I am aware the weather is complete shit elsewhere. We have been lucky – the storms earlier this week just produced rain, no wind, no downpours. The storms last night ended up being about 10 minutes of rain, if that much.
** We have a big snowblower we got from our neighbors when they moved, but it’s really for blizzard-level amounts. We have not had blizzard-level amounts since they left. It is working.

Sunny Sunday!

After all the grey and ick and rain, we have one of those sharp, sunny winter days, and the sun is just SO NICE.

I am still basking in the glow of the new fully functioning clothes dryer. Four loads of linens yesterday… Lily has clean blankets in the living room! All the kitchen towels and cleaning towels are clean! (We were just about to completely run out of them.) Clean sheets & duvet cover & bed blanket!

Sadly, my brother has dibs on the laundry room today… But, I have a big ol’ to-do list of other things around the house that need to be done – and because it is a day ending in Y, I don’t want to do any of them, LOL.

But, I am happy to report that going back to my little index card box of to-do’s has kept me very engaged and on track, and I’m super pleased about that. Today’s stack looks pretty monstrous, but it has even the smallest things, like “do your damn skincare” and “water the plants” – because honestly, if it is not written down, it will not even enter my head.

A stack of multicolored index cards - the top one says "Special Today: 1/7 - Sunday - Plant Stand
Sometimes your brain needs a piece of paper and a pen…

It is weird and kinda frustrating to have a brain that just can’t look around and see “oh that needs to be done” or build routines on it’s own. Like, I really wonder what it is like to cruise through the day and just get things done around the house without a second thought. Cause my brain looks around and goes “none of this is actually important” LOL.

I mean, OK brain, no one is going to die if none of this gets done, but can we agree that life is a little more pleasant when you get some lotion on your hands & feet, the couch isn’t a depression nest, you remember to take your vitamins, the plants aren’t dead, and things are generally just a little bit tidy? No? No dopamine in that? OK, how about pretty multicolored index cards? Yes? Pretty multicolored index cards it is, then.

I will admit to being a little mad/sad that for so many years of my life, I felt like SUCH a failure. To have my shit together with regards to work & school, and then be such a hot mess the rest of the time – I was lazy, didn’t care, and was generally lousy at life. That sucked.

But the reality has been just that I’m tired (thanks captialism for making me perpetually afraid of homelessness and overworking myself!), easily overwhelmed, and struggle mightily with task initiation. (Learning about task initiation as a problem was such a “Wait, WHAT?!” moment.)

I really do care, I’m NOT fucking lazy, and I am damn fine at life. I just need to actively make some adjustments, that’s all.

And on that note, I’ve gotten into my comfy pants, and my get shit done playlist is at the ready – time to go trick my brain into getting things knocked out so we can rest later with no freakin’ guilt. (I am still working on the “rest without guilt no matter what because rest is a biological imperative” aspect of things – but I’m getting better.)

You have a great Sunday, and if you need to trick your brain into getting things done – that’s OK!

Oh happy day, we have a dryer!

Look at how beautiful it is!!

A white Whirlpool clothes dryer with a front drop down door and three knobs on top
Oooh, shiny!

And I couldn’t 100% tell from the picture online when I ordered it, but it is a perfect match to the washing machine, yay! It’s certainly something that does not matter at all, but it’s nice. And even though it’s super basic, which is exactly what I wanted, it does have THREE heat settings, you can turn the buzzer off if you want, and there is a light on the inside!

The delivery guys were VERY amused at how excited I was about it. I sent them off with a bottle of water and $20 each – hopefully that made up for the shitty weather* and having a very weird lady dancing around the basement as they installed it.

It is already going on it’s first load of what will be many, many loads of linens today.

New appliances are so very exciting. I’d say it’s cause I’m old, but I’ve always been this way, LOL.

*The winter weather never really materialized, we got about 10 minutes of sleet, and it’s just been 37º and light rain all day, and having gone out to the market in it, I can tell you – it is so gross out there.

Shiny New Year, Same AWESOME You.

It’s a whole gorgeous new year and the fact that you got from this time last year to now is a testament to your awesomeness.

I inadvertently got things off on a good note – popped into Starbucks and they had “Call Me Maybe” playing and well, I started dancing, cause I unabashedly love that song. A lady waiting for her coffee looked at me and said, “THAT is the energy I’m taking into the New Year!” Couldn’t help but leave with a big smile to go with my coffee.

But let’s be real – after the last…7 or so years being what they were (or a whole lifetime for some folks, let’s be honest) – just getting through it is Damn Good. And if you don’t want to do a single damn new thing in 2024 – THAT IS OK! Surviving another year is hard work and absolutely enough on its own.

But – if you do have stuff on your 2024 to-do list – GO GET ‘EM TIGER! I believe in you.

And maybe if you’re wanting to do something but today just isn’t the day (we were all up too late and we may be a wee bit hungover and in the northern hemisphere, the weather is a bit shit) – you don’t have to wait for a whole shiny new year. You get a clean slate every year, month, week, and day. Heck, every hour, minute and second if you want to really get into the grains of it.

So, if not right now – maybe in an an hour, a day, a week, a month – you don’t have to wait for a whole new pristine calendar. And you can also half-ass whatever it is today!

And two little pieces of advice: If you’re making a new habit, break it down to components that are small, manageable, and repeatable. If you’re breaking a habit, figure out what you’ll replace it with.

For myself, 2024 is gonna be mostly a maintenance year. I’m on a solid footing with my daily yoga and at least making sure the house is…stable? I really want to stay on top of that.

I still haven’t gotten around to finding a class at the arts center – felt like a fun idea last year and then it zipped out of my brain. I’ll try again this year.

I do want to put more time to my hobbies. It’s not so much that I don’t have the time for them, it’s just feeling like I am entitled to use my time for my hobbies seems to be the obstacle, if that makes sense?

I know I can’t fix the world, no matter how much I want to – but I will help out how I can, when I can.

Mostly, I’m gonna try to make 2024 not totally suck for the bits I can control.

Well, 2023 has been…a year.

And if you’re feeling a bit “Oof, that felt like a lot” – you’re not wrong.

Covid, wars, climate collapse, the continued rise of fascism in the US and elsewhere, billionaires being twats, the hot mess that is generative AI, mass shootings, and other things that just aren’t coming to mind right now. Pretty much every time we turned on the news, there was a firehose of shit.

But some good things happened, too.

And I’ll admit – everything except the Gävle Goat, I had to do a google search for “good things in 2023” – cause when there is so much bad news, that is what sticks in your brain. And there is a ton more than that little list. Seriously, if you need a lift, do that google search.

And on a personal level – 2023 wasn’t too bad.

  • Covid still dominates pretty much all my decision making, which sucks, but I did not get Covid, so, that’s definitely a good thing.
  • Got a promotion at work which did NOT result in more stuff being dumped on my plate, and I’ve done a reasonably decent job of maintaining boundaries. And a very stressful team lead left.
  • The big clear out of the house for the appraisal was a HUGE effort, but absolutely worth it – and I’ve done a damn good job of maintaining things!
  • We had a great and safe trip down to the beach. Mmm, pato tacos & Pacifico on the sound… And cheese!
A slate platter with three kinds of cheese and crackers and jams and fruits
YUM.
  • I met a capybara named Tater.
A photo of my brother & myself kneeling next to a capybara named Tater. Tater is 7 months old and weighs approximately 35 pounds. He is shaped somewhat like a potato with legs. His hair is medium brown and very coarse. He has dark eyes that with markings around them that look like cateye eyeliner. His ears are small and round and can flatten down when swimming. His feet have 3 toes that are partially webbed, also for swimming.
  • I continued to find lots of outdoor activities to do over the course of the year, and great restaurants with patio seating.
A fancy fruity orange drink in a highball glass.
I can’t remember what it was called, but it was delicious!
  • And the LilyMonster had a great year health-wise and just being Lily. She’s 14, so, a good health year is awesome and precious. Even this morning she had an impressive case of the zooms treating the hallway/kitchen/living room as her personal racetrack.
A shot of Lily, a black and orange tortoiseshell cat, sitting on the corner of the counter, looking just above the camera
Treats?

My brother is off to spend New Year’s Eve & Day with one of his friends – the Ravens are playing the Dolphins – their respective favorite teams. He felt bad for me being on my own – HAHAHAHAHA! I appreciate it, but I am so totally good on my own. Lily & I will be ringing in the new year here at home with steak & shrimp pasta for me, and the little salmon filet Santa brought for her. Hell, we may be in bed by 10PM.

However you are ringing in the new year, have fun and be safe. I want you around in 2024.

Ahhh, Saturday

And a 3 day weekend to boot! Had a good sleep in, got my errands done, and I am not leaving the house again today. Was gonna run the car through the wash, but it escaped my mind while I was out, so that can happen tomorrow morning – I really just want to stay in for the remainder of the day – and I have cemented that decision by changing out of my jeans into my comfy pants.

Still waiting on a delivery date for the dryer – I knew it would take a bit with the holidays and the appliance store had to actually get it from the Whirlpool warehouse – even when I initially looked at the website it said the earliest date would be January 3rd, but wahhh, I want my dryer! I’m good on clean clothes, but there are going to be So. Many. Linens. to be washed and dried when it gets here.

The round the house to-do list is pretty short today, which is nice cause all I really want to do today is curl up on the couch and read. I’m blaming the weather – it’s yet another grey and mucky day out there. WHERE IS MY SUN?!? Seriously Mother Nature, I can only take so many Vitamin D supplements – help me out here.

Lily is not helping here – just look at this little snoozer!

Lily, a black and orange tortoiseshell cat, curled up sleeping in front of the heat register, with her nose tucked under her tail.

OK, time to pry myself off the couch so I can go DO ALL THE THINGS and then I can chill out and enjoy the rest of the day.

You have an excellent Saturday!

Happy Boxing Day!

I am so, SO glad I took today off. Even our little low key Christmas is tiring and the extra day is nice, especially since I did not win the lottery last night and I’ll have to go back to work tomorrow.

And a bit tiring it may have been – it was very nice. Great brunch (and leftovers!) and mimosas and books and a sweater and a needle felting kit! And a stocking chock full of snacks.

Lily had a great Christmas, too – a big box! Tissue paper! Catnip toys! SO MUCH KITTY FOOD! (No Chewy orders needed for a while, LOL.)

Action Shot of Lily, a black and orange tortoiseshell cat, rolling on the floor with a catnip toy tucked into one paw, and the other paw snagging some tissue paper
Being good paid off!

Today is gonna be half R&R and half keeping up the habits I’ve been trying to re-establish during my time off. I’ve actually done a really good job of it and I’m pretty proud of myself. My little to-do list box is keeping me engaged with the household to-do’s, and I’ve only skipped one day of yoga – the day I was running all over the place all morning – I decided 7K steps by noon was sufficient. (And I started right back up the next day!)

The biggest task today is clearing up Christmas – So. Much. Tissue. Paper. 🤣 There is now a dedicated tissue paper basket for the LilyMonster where it will all get folded up for her and ready to go when she destroys the current bits. (Doesn’t every cat have a tissue paper basket?)

A beige fabric lined basket, half filled with folded Christmas themed sheets of tissue paper

Mostly I just need to get the living room to a point where Iggy the Roomba can take a cruise through it, and I’ve got about 45 minutes until it kicks off, so I’d best get on that.

If you’re working today, I hope things are just busy enough that you don’t get bored – but not so busy that you hate people, LOL.

Have a great day!

Merry Christmas and/or Happy Monday to you!

First, a huge shoutout to everyone working today. Hospitals and firefighters – thank you for being there and I hope no one needs your services. Starbucks – thanks for providing caffeine so I don’t set my kitchen on fire and need the aforementioned firefighters or hospitals. Grocery stores for that forgotten ingredient – or batteries – thank you. To the folks that don’t celebrate Christmas and said, “Sure, I can cover that on call shift” – thank you. (Debbie H, I’m looking at you – I remember those days back in support – it was so appreciated.)

Happy to see that the Swedish Gävle Goat still stands this morning! Granted, the jackdaws are apparently making quite a snack out of it, but it’s not on fire! (No, I don’t know why I’m invested in a straw goat 6 time zones away, but I am.)

My brother got me a body pillow for my Christmas Eve gift – I sleep on my side with one leg kicked out and I have gotten to An Age where I want something under that knee that won’t slide down to the foot of the bed overnight. It. Is. Awesome. Got into bed, kicked my leg over it and did a little stretch and my back popped in a dozen places – yeah, that little bit of support under my knee does make a difference!

I mean, that alone makes it a great Christmas already. And I woke up early enough that there is still a ton of time before getting brunch going, so I have plenty of time to get the around the house to-do’s knocked out and get in my yoga. I’ve been on a solid roll of daily yoga this past week and I really want to keep that going.

So, it’s time to go change into comfy pants, tick off that to-do list and get my stretch on – then make ALL THE CASSEROLES!

I hope you have a wonderful, peaceful day.
