So, Sean & Jorge!

We went to the Fairfax County shelter on Sunday and came home with these darlings.

They’ve had a rough go of it, and I am astounded at how well they are doing in just a bit over 48 hours in their new home. They were dumped in a box in a park. The person that found them tried to keep them, but had dogs and that didn’t go well. To the shelter on June 9th. Sean spent most of his time hiding under a blanket until someone decided to put him & Jorge in the same space.

When we met them, Jorge was up on top of a cat tree, but happy to engage, and Sean was sitting out in the open ready for pets. The volunteer we were talking to was just gushing about Sean’s improvement.

Well, my brother & I both pretty much instantly fell in love with these two, paperwork was filled out, adoption fees paid, and there was a VERY LOUD 15 minute drive home. My gawd, their car voices are something else.

Their ages are estimates from the county vet – Jorge is 8 and Sean is 7, but I wouldn’t be shocked if Jorge was younger and Sean a few years older.

Jorge is very outgoing and curious, and it was a challenge to keep him in the bedroom for the first day – I just wanted them both to feel a touch more secure before they had more space to explore. He was SO damn excited yesterday when I opened the door and said “Go have fun!” He’s very affectionate – loves some lap time, getting petted, and loves to give head butts. Has a squeaky little meow and a great purr. Can’t have catnip, LOL – gets him too wound up and bitey. He can also open cabinet doors. (We have fixed that.) When I woke up this morning he had put himself in a headlock under my arm.

He also adores my brother and climbs all over him and snuggles with him, too.

When I let him out this morning, he spent maybe 10-15 minutes downstairs and came back up like, “Damn, it’s all the same as yesterday.” (Also probably disappointed that he couldn’t sneak into the basement again.)

His county vet exam looked good, he’ll probably need his teeth cleaned at some point, and he is a bit of a chonk at 14 pounds, so we’ll be talking food plans with the vet at their meet & greet/checkup.

He is so damn pretty

So happy he willingly wears his collar and pretty tag

Sean is 7, but reminds me of a little old man that likes to sit in his rocker on the front porch. When we first got home, straight under the bed – not surprising at all, and I just let him be. But that only lasted about an hour and by 8:30, this was my boy:

Sean, a grey & white fluffy cat, laying on his back sleeping, with his front paws tucked up

He’s far more reserved than Jorge, but enjoys being petted and does air biscuits. He will give gentle headbutts, and will let you rub his tummy, and we all know that is HUGE with a kitty. (And it’s not the belly rub trap!) He doesn’t meow so much as go “prrp!” and has a nice little purr. He was not as eager to exit the bedroom and that is fine. He did venture out a couple times last night, and this morning he did come all the way downstairs for a few minutes.

He may be a cat that is just totally content with having a good meal and a safe place to sleep, and that’s OK by me – I am so happy to provide that for him. The other thing I know right now is that he is exhausted. With everything he’s been through, he’s catching up on a month of sleep. (Jorge is pretty knackered, too, but he’s also afraid he’s going to miss something.)

I do know that Sean feels safe, because cats who don’t feel secure, don’t sleep like this:

Shot of Sean, a white & grey fluffy cat, stretched out on his back sleeping very soundly
Zzzzzzzzzzz

And he sleeps like that pretty much all the time – stretched way out, legs everywhere, belly exposed and he is out like a light.

His health report looked pretty good, too. Odd thing is that when they came in, Sean wasn’t neutered, but Jorge was. When Sean had his neuter appointment, the notes said he presented as “Attitude: Bright/Alert/Responsive & Fractious” Oh, I know what that one means! But also, he had to be so scared and stressed out, so I don’t blame him. We’ve already given our vet the heads up on that and he’ll be getting a low dose of gabapentin before the appointment to take the edge off and see how it goes.

He also has milliary dermatitis, aka, itchy bumps. They itch, he scratches, they start to heal and scab over, which itches, lather, rinse, repeat. Could be from anything – really bad reaction to fleas, fungus, bacteria, stress(!!), food allergy or “just because” – but we’ll work with the vet on that as well. He’s been so good about letting me go over him veeeery gently with a flea comb to get the little scabs that have come off out of his fur, and has tolerated being wiped down with some anti-dander oatmeal wipes I had on hand to keep things clean & cool and less itchy. We’ve got properly medicated-with-aloe-no-sting wipes coming tomorrow – no harm in it between now and seeing the vet. (I’m guessing there is some prednisone in our future.)

He even lets me wipe out his eye boogers. Also allows forehead kisses – and he gets a LOT of forehead kisses. And he has the softest fur. His collar just arrived and he let me put it on him with his pretty tag with zero issues.

Chilin like a villian

I will always miss Lily (and Carmen and alllllll the pets that came before) but these two are doing a wonderful job of filling up my heart and letting me be ridiculous in my affection to them. Feel like I’ve yet again hit a kitty jackpot and got the best cats ever. (Eight times in a row now, weird how it works out that way.)

Sean and Jorge are here!

They are 7 and 8 years old, and awesome. Will post more later, but here they are – Sean is the kitty in front.

Note to me:

You cannot adopt all 26 cats at the county shelter. That is OK. Your house is a nice size, but it is not 26 cats large.

Once you find the right one(s) – you won’t be letting down any of the cats you can’t adopt.

The cats at the county shelter DO get adopted – some not as quickly as others, but they get adopted. You saw this morning as a 4 year old creamsicle kitty was checked in and adopted out in under an hour. It’s not just kittens getting adopted quickly. Over the past week you’ve seen lots of grown kitties get to go to forever homes.

Remember how you tell everyone else, “Do what you can, when you can”? Adopting one or two cats absolutely qualifies as that, so listen to your own advice.

God save me from the cable company

These people are going to be the death of me.

Get email that we have to order upgraded equipment because they were doing a software update. Get on support chat and order.

Turns out the support person didn’t know what we needed and just upgraded the whole damn account, seems to have sent us shit we didn’t need, bricked a DVR in the process and dropped half our channels, and I am still trying to get them to tell me what was actually needed – cause I think they didn’t actually send the one thing we DID need.

Livid does not even begin to describe where I am with this clusterfuck.

Note to self: Never, EVER use the chat option, even when they say “Oh, you can use chat!” Because the Tier 1 chat techs aren’t trained to do shit and won’t go off script. That’s not on the techs, that is on the cable company for absolute craptastic training and support policies. ASK ME HOW I KNOW ABOUT GOOD AND BAD SUPPORT POLICIES.

So, I’m waiting on an email to confirm that basically rather than saying “I have no idea what this software upgrade requires, let me get you to someone who knows what is going on” instead decided to go into sales mode and fuck everything up in the process.

GOOD TIMES.

Well, that beach week WHIPPED by!

And it was lovely, as always – though we all agreed that it went by even faster than usual – like we lost 2 days somewhere along the line.

But, so much good food, and reading done, and time outside not thinking about well, anything. 10/10.

AND DOLPHINS!

And this beautiful heron right outside in the creek behind our house:

What I think is a Great Blue Heron, crouched down and walking through a creek with trees reflected in the water behind it, and a grassy bank in front of it

And somehow I managed to get this white Heron/Ibis/Egret in flight on the sound.

A white Heron (or possibly Ibis or Egret) just starting to take off from the sound. Its legs are outstretched and just above the water and it's wings are fully extended. There is water grass in the foreground and to the side.

I so love all the wildlife down there – and of course, my beloved turtles.

A bale of turtles, half clambering up on the creek bank, half in the water - all looking for treats.

Just a perfect break.

After a rather white knuckled drive home thanks to rain storms along the coast, I was knackered and the plan this morning was to just sleep until I woke up, so I’d written off the farmers market today.

I woke up at 7:15 AM, HAHAHAHA. And it was raining – but I had to get out for coffee anyway, and have rain jacket and hat, will travel. So we’ve got salad stuff and breads and I consider myself a very hardcore farmers market lady, LOL. (Of course, the rain ended just as I was leaving.)

Hit the grocery store to fill in a few gaps and they had sunflowers, so now I’ve got some sunshine in a vase.

A vase of large sunflowers

Annoying task for the weekend is to get some new cable/internet equipment installed because ours is ancient and will not be compatible with an upcoming software update, which has been maddening at every turn already.

Fun task is to start looking for new furry friends in earnest – which honestly, is a little…nerve wracking? What if we pick a kitty or kitties that thinks we’re just overly needy loser humans? Not helping is that we have two county shelters now, which is awesome, but also – even though we can see all the kitties online, what if we go to one shelter and somehow miss a kitty that needs us more at the other shelter? (Yeah, that’s my brain for you.)

Just have to remind myself that as much as I want to save every cat there, I can’t – and I don’t have to, because our shelter does an excellent job of getting their wards into homes.

Have a great weekend, and tell your pets I said HI!

Well, it is a 4th…

Not much to celebrate in my mind – the confirmation this week that the country is essentially being run by a religious tribunal kinda puts a damper on things.

When I was a kid, the 4th was great – it meant a cookout, sparklers, and a lot of popsicles. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve become increasingly uncomfortable with it. Feels like every year it brings out more and more aggressively nationalist assholes.

My racist fuckwit neighbor… Already had the Gadsden flag license plates, so we all knew. Then the morning after the SCOTUS immunity ruling, an American flag, a Gadsden flag, and a Join or Die flag out in front. Then yesterday, a 1776 flag and another one that I can’t quite see. Dude, we know you’re a racist POS, settle the fuck down.

My company sent out a little “happy 4th” email that included this:

Let’s not forget, this holiday is a time to celebrate and reflect on the collective freedoms we all share. Recognizing and appreciating the diversity that exists across the country is what makes America unique.

Not exactly the full throated rebuke to fascism that I would have preferred, but it’s something and probably the closest we’ll get to corporate admitting there is a whole world outside work that is trying very hard to hurt their employees.

We’ll see if we have another one or not.

WE HAVE A FAN!

And it’s awesome!

SO BREEZY!
Posted in Miscellany | 2 Comments

Learn from me!

If you’re not much of a DIY’er and you’re going to replace a ceiling fan – just call someone to do it. Just trust me on this one. So far, replacing the one in my room has involved a fair amount of cussing, way more fucking assembly than anticipated, completely unexpected difficulty in getting the old one out, briefly thinking that somehow I’d bought a fan that needed a different sized ceiling box, and a trip to the hardware store for more screws.

And we haven’t even gotten the mounting bracket on the ceiling.

Now, all the bits of the new fan that need to be assembled are put together, so that’s something. I just really thought this would be a couple hours, not span the whole weekend.

But it will be worth it when the fan is up and I can put it on hurricane mode and not roast to death because the upstairs is always hotter than downstairs and I refuse to put the AC lower.

However, when it comes time for the living room – I’m calling someone.

Rambly Sunday…

Right now I should be doing a reset around the house, but my brain is very “Nah” about it, which is basically any and every Sunday, LOL.

I realized that I am now actually going to be going to the beach next month – I’d just set it solidly in my mind that I’d be here looking after Lily – and I am not even slightly physically or mentally prepared for it. Like, I don’t know where anything is that I’d need to take, what laundry needs to bed done, no idea what I still need to buy, etc, etc.

Granted, the beach is a place you can just show up with your wallet and whatever you need, they have – but that gets a little pricey if you *only* show up with your wallet.

I still catch myself looking around for Lily every now and again. There has of course been the second-guessing myself this week, but I also know if there had been any better option, the vet would have given it to us. When there is a new cat (or cats) around, I suspect I’ll still occasionally be looking for the wrong one, or be surprised when I see a not-Lily come around a corner.

In ways to procrastinate & distract myself, I have finally gotten around to watching Resident Alien on Netflix. It’s very silly, with a few serious themes here and there, but on the whole, pretty light. There was of course literally just now, a very sweet and sad scene involving a death and gosh, don’t know why my face is all wet. But really, Alan Tudyk playing an alien pretending to be a human – he’s perfect.

Oh the “getting older is bullshit” front, last week I managed to tweak my upper arm BY AWKWARDLY REACHING FOR THE ALARM CLOCK. I shit you not. The simple solution is to rest the arm. Unfortunately, it is my dominant arm and no matter how hard I try to be conscious of letting it rest, I forget and keep re-tweaking it. So, I have ordered a shoulder brace – should help keep it a little more immobile and remind me that “Hey dumbass, you’re resting this arm, remember?”

Full reset probably isn’t gonna happen today, but I have made cold brew for the week, switched out all the air filters, and I am going to at least get some laundry done – so it’s better than nothing.

You enjoy what’s left of the weekend.

Whoa it’s Saturday again already

And it’s fuck all hot out there – 12:30 with a heat index of 96 already. I kinda sorta beat the heat at the farmers market, but I was still sweaty & gross by the time I got home. But we have salad stuff!

The house has been way too empty without any furry friends about – my brother pointed out that the last time I was living somewhere with no pets, I was in college. And that was a very, very long time ago. Our friends sent flowers, which was so sweet – and their dog was included on the card, too. And another friend made a donation to one of our local animal welfare groups. It’s been so nice to know so many people really do understand.

I don’t know where the saying came from but “Grief is love with nowhere to go” is so damn spot on.

So, it’s not going to be long before I rechannel that grief into smothering love for another cat. Talked to my brother about it, and the search will start when we get back from the beach. Even though I’m going to Baltimore for a few days at the end of July, that would give him some bonding time if we find a new friend right away.

There will never be another Lily, but every cat is one in a million, and it sucks too much to not have a cat (or cats) here.

My biggest concern is that whoever the new cat is, they will look at us and think “Damn, these are some weirdo losers.” 😹
